Chapter 9: The Good Side
We have spent some time talking about the dangers that innovation can bring to the public if utilized incorrectly. One innovation has cause a lot of stir, and its called AI. If you have read most of the chapters in this blog post then you are quite familiar with AI at this point. As discussed previously, AI can bring as much harm as it can benefit the public. We have explored the ways in which AI has caused harm, and how innovations can spell disaster for some over others. Being a responsible innovator is key to being successful in a world demanding their needs be met. Before you go running to the latest forum telling everyone how much harm AI can bring, and how its the worst man-made invention in the history of innovation, lets talk about how innovation can also be a life saver to some.
That's right, lets talk about AI again. In an article by the New York Post in 2024, they talked about the recent UCLA study that showed that AI had a 17% better accuracy for detecting cancer over doctors. A 17% accuracy increase probably didn't have the impact that it was supposed to, but for the world of medicine, 17% is a significant achievement and a high life saving chance for those that are suffering from cancer.
In most cases, when AI is brought up in conversation, it leads to a negative reaction and followed with equally negative comments. AI was such a large innovation that it shook the entire world to its core. With any large scale innovation, there is always fear that the harm would greatly outweigh the benefit to society. This can be very true if done incorrectly, but when a responsible innovator and those who create policies come together for the greater good, the benefits can exponentially outweigh the negative consequence.
To emphasize the points made in this chapter and last, when striving to be the best innovator ever, its always wise to think responsibly. One day, you as a responsible innovator, could also save someone's life.
