Chapter 5: The Fight Between AI and Education

If you're a student in College, Highschool, and even Middle School, you have more than likely been told to never use AI while completing school work. In most cases, you have probably been threatened to never use AI or some repercussion might ensue.

This has been, and currently is, the normal procedure of AI in 2024.

But things are starting to change.

A famous quote by Upton Sinclair states "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it."

In the age of AI, we have seen the impact it has on the workforce with significant job loss. Rachel Curry addresses this issue within her article, "Recent data shows AI job losses are rising, but the numbers don’t tell the full story." Just as the title hints, the article starts with the same unoriginal story of AI causing job loss, but at the end, she points out that AI has only replaced aspects of a job. Though the scope of the job is replaceable by AI, this has allowed another position to open up when it comes to managing AI.

You are probably asking yourself why this matters if AI is still causing people to lose their jobs?

Well, at this point in time, AI has been seen only as a threat. Majority of it rising within the education systems, where students are taught to fear using AI. It has not stopped students from using AI, and most times, its unavoidable due to its presence in daily activities (like searching on the internet!). Instead, students are using AI, but they are not being taught HOW to use it. Just like any other educational tool used to help students with academics, they need to be educated in the proper use of AI.

It is true that we are seeing a large decline in jobs due to AI, but this could be argued that many companies and education systems are not properly teaching people how to use AI. Educators are stunting the educational requirements students will need as they move into the workforce. AI will never go away, and it will continue to reach into our lives, which is why it is time to teach students how to use AI. We need to be prepared for AI in the workplace, and we need to pass this education down to those who will soon enter.

I want to end this post by encouraging others to learn how to properly use AI. It should not be a tool that replaces every aspect of creativity and learning, rather use it as a tool to enhance your abilities. I encourage those within the educational system to teach kids how to use AI so they may be better prepared for this new world.

AI can be the tool for innovation, not destruction. Its time we treat it as such.
